Anne Beresford and Michael Hogan Join Herbert Smith Freehills To Support Queensland’s Energy And Infrastructure Boom

Anne Beresford and Michael Hogan Join Herbert Smith Freehills to Support Queensland’s Energy and Infrastructure Boom
Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has announced the appointment of Anne Beresford and Michael Hogan as partners in its Brisbane-based Projects, Energy & Infrastructure (PEI) practice, as the firm continues to expand its capacity to support Queensland’s growing energy and infrastructure pipeline.
Anne joins from Allens and brings deep expertise in the energy and resources sector, with a particular focus on oil, gas, and new energy projects. Michael joins from Johnson Winter Slattery and specialises in the development of infrastructure, energy, and water projects. Both new partners have extensive experience advising on major transactions across the Asia-Pacific region.
According to Nick Baker, PEI Managing Partner, the hires are part of the firm's strategic investment in Brisbane in anticipation of Queensland’s multi-billion-dollar public and private investments in renewable energy, energy storage, and transmission infrastructure, as well as major infrastructure projects for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
“These projects are complex and require specialist legal skills and industry experience that our firm can offer, and with the arrival of Anne and Michael, it will only strengthen our offering,” Nick said.
Clare Smethurst, Brisbane Office Managing Partner, said, “We welcome Anne and Michael to our market-leading Queensland team. Each brings the right mix of technical excellence and sector experience to support our clients through this exciting period of growth in our region.”
Commenting on her appointment, Anne said, “Queensland is well placed to lead in the development of new energy projects. Herbert Smith Freehills sees this potential, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining its market-leading energy team.”
" I’m absolutely thrilled to have joined the partnership at Herbert Smith Freehills along with my good friend and brilliant lawyer Michael Hogan. There’s a real buzz in the HSF energy team at the moment, and I’m excited to be part of it. I’m especially looking forward to working with Michael and our fellow newly promoted partner Gabby Herron-Cartwright to grow the energy practice in Brisbane. Thank you to my mentors and friends who have supported me through my legal career – I would not be here without your guidance, patience and encouragement. Thank you also to my clients for trusting me with your work and supporting my transition to HSF and to partner."
Michael said, “The 2032 Olympics and the broader energy transition present urgent and complex infrastructure challenges. Herbert Smith Freehills has the right mix of depth, technical expertise, and creativity to guide clients through these transformative projects.”
Gabby Herron-Cartwright, Partner, Projects & Project Finance said,
"So excited to have Anne Beresford and Michael Hogan joining us in Brisbane - both bring excellent hashtag#energy and hashtag#infrastructure expertise to our market-leading #Queensland team and I'm really looking forward to working together."
Clare Smethurst, Partner said,
"A huge welcome to Michael Hogan and Anne Beresford who joined our Brisbane energy practice this week, and Gabby Herron-Cartwright last month. Queensland is undergoing a tremendous period of growth, with major project plans underway as part of the energy transition as well as preparations to host the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Our clients require the right mix of sector experience and technical legal excellence to support the delivery of these projects and Anne, Michael and Gabby bring that to our market leading energy team."
Michael Hogan, Partner said,
"Nineteen years ago, I informed Herbert Smith Freehills that I had to withdraw from my summer clerkship because I'd accepted an offer to move to Canberra to join Australia's diplomatic service. It's very exciting, and quite surreal, to let you know that this week I joined the partnership at HSF. I'm delighted to be starting with my good friend, and outstanding lawyer, Anne Beresford. Thank you to my professional friends and clients who have been so supportive of this move. Thanks also, I suppose, to the HSF recruitment team of the mid-noughties for not putting a permanent line through my name."
Kirsty Robb, Senior Business Development Manager - Energy & Infrastructure said,
Great to have Anne Beresford and Michael Hogan joining newly promoted Partner Gabby Herron-Cartwright in Brisbane office. More support for our energy and infrastructure clients.
Herbert Smith Freehills now boasts over 150 partners globally in the energy and infrastructure sectors. The addition of Anne and Michael follows the recent promotion of Gabby Herron-Cartwright to the Brisbane partnership, who specialises in financing and development of major energy and infrastructure projects.
